New Cookbook Draws on Community Traditions
Between the striking black, white and red covers of Best in the Neighborhood, our wonderful new cookbook, are 250 mostly easy-to-make and always tasty recipes. These dishes will make every meal special. Some – like the Chocolate Striped Oranges (page 95) – come from family collections and have never been in a cookbook before.
The recipes draw on the food traditions of our four sponsoring congregations and our community at large, and the choice is spectacular, ranging from tasty, easy-to-make treats to unusual gourmet recipes: Asian Chicken Wings, Baked Salami or Hot Clam Dip for an Army, Colonial Pumpkin Soup, Italian Sausage Soup or Parisian Onion Soup, Artichoke Pie, BBQ Beef, Stuffed Sesame Grilled Shrimp, a ton of salads and vegetable dishes, breads, cookies, candies and relishes. And desserts. Oh, those desserts: Banana-Cranberry Parfait, Overnight Chocolate Mousse, Southern Chocolate Rum Pecan Pie.
“I’ve always believed that the test of a cookbook’s value is that it contains one recipe you can’t wait to make,” says Dr. Audrey Gordon, SELCFIA executive director. “I found many such recipes in Best in the Neighborhood. Plus many people who received initial copies tell me they feel the same way.”
Best in the Neighborhood is available at SELCFIA’s sponsors (Congregation B’nai Torah, Christ United Methodist Church, Holy Cross Catholic Church and Zion Lutheran Church) and at several area stores, like Frank Kiesel & Associates Hair Design at 48 Green Bay Road in Winnetka, Smugglers Jewelry and Accessories in Garrity Square at 1855-B Deerfield Road in Highland Park and Sunset Foods’ Highland Park store. Or call our offices at 847-433-9411.
Best in the Neighborhood costs $15 each for one or two copies and $12 each for three or more ($30 for two, $36 for three).
